[Freaktab Developer Review] Geniatech MyGica ATV582
I just received a new TV box to try out from my friends at Geekbuying.com. They have just received shipment of several different Geniatech MyGica boxes. Link I was expecting the ATV1800E, which is also available from Geekbuying.com...but this one is very nice.
This box is a very small, solidly built TV box.
Here are the specs:

The first thing I did was to open the case and take some pictures of the board. Nice build quality...very neatly constructed.
Then I fired it up connected to my home network via wifi and went through the setup process which didn't take long.
You do have the option of using the standard Android launcher or their custom TV launcher. It's easy to switch back and forth by going into settings and tick the home screen you want.
The box only has 8GB NAND flash with about half taken up with system files...so you only have about 4GB left over on internal SD for data. That's quite a limitation, but you can add an external SD.
Before I did much else...the next thing was to run Antutu. I noticed on Geekbuying's site that they achieved an Antutu score of 22302. I, however, wasn't able to complete an Antutu test without the app crashing.
Among the apps pre-installed is v13.xx of XBMC. I was able to run XBMC with no problems after I installed some video plug-ins. HD videos streamed well, without any problems over my wifi.
Another pre-installed app is Netflix. I'm not sure whether it's HD...I will have to test further, but Netflix video was smooth (after the usual choppy beginning).
HD videos played very well from YouTube as well. All of the 4K sample YouTube videos are brilliant on my 1080p screen...that's the best I can get, though.
At least at the beginning, I recommend running the TV Launcher so you can access some of the special settings. From here, you can disable the navigation bar so XBMC is completely visible. Otherwise, some of XBMC's controls are hidden behind the nav bar (see one of the screenshots I've posted below). I also recommend downloading an app called Button Savior...there's a version for rooted devices, and also a version for non-rooted devices. It will put a little tab to the right of the screen you can click to give you the ability to navigate the OS. More screen shots of that coming soon.
Attached are some screenshots I've taken and other pictures. I will also post a link to a video as soon as I get one produced.
So far, I feel this is a very effective product. I haven't tried any dual boot tweaks, or custom ROM developement for these products just yet...but I have a feeling this will be a very popular Android box.
Stay tuned for updates. I've only had this box a few days...and more testing is in the works. If there's something specific you would like me to test/add to this review...feel free to post.
